Support for Chile Student Movement Falls to 67%, Poll Shows

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Support for Chile’s student movement fell in October as the weekly round of marches and disturbances dragged on for a sixth month with little sign of a solution, research group Adimark GfK said.

President Sebastian Pinera failed to capitalize on the drop in support for the students, with his approval rating little changed at 31 percent, near a record low, the Santiago-based company said in an e-mailed report today.

“These results may be signs of weariness after more than six months of demonstrations,” Adimark said in the report. “However, approval for the way the government has dealt with the student conflict isn’t improving.”

Support for student demands fell to 67 percent in October from 79 percent the month before as disapproval for the way the protests were conducted grew to 57 percent from 45 percent, Adimark said in the report today. The poll of 1,110 people had a margin of error of three percentage points, Adimark said.

Seventy-three percent of respondents in October and September disapproved of the government’s response to student demands for lower cost and higher quality schooling, Adimark said. Protesters will march outside the congressional building in Valparaiso this week to pressure authorities for increased education outlays in the 2012 budget.
