Manchester United to Sign Brazilian Teenager From PSV: Roundup

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers, with clickable links to the Web.

PSV Teenager

Manchester United has won a battle against other clubs to sign 15-year-old Brazilian midfielder Andreas Pereira from PSV Eindhoven, the Daily Mail reported.

Pereira moved from Brazil to Belgium as a child before joining PSV, the Mail said. The teenager was cited by the newspaper as saying United “is a dream club for me.”

Poppy Ban

World soccer ruling body FIFA doesn’t want to create a precedent by allowing England players to wear poppies on their shirts for a Nov. 12 exhibition game against Spain, the Daily Mail reported.

Wearing the flowers to honor war veterans for a match against Germany, for example, could be seen as provocative, the Mail cited a FIFA official as saying.

Redknapp Return

Harry Redknapp wants to return to work within a fortnight following heart surgery, defying doctor’s orders, the Daily Mirror reported.

The Tottenham coach watched Tottenham’s 3-1 win at Fulham on television at home, the Mirror added.

Ferguson Stand

Only eight Manchester United staff knew about a plan to name a stand after Alex Ferguson to mark his 25th anniversary as team coach, the Sun reported.

Ferguson first saw the lettering on the stand before United’s game against Sunderland two days ago, the Sun said.

Rovers Target Striker

Blackburn is ready to make a bid for Hoffenheim striker Vedad Ibisevic in January after missing out on signing the Bosnian in the summer, the Mirror said.

The 27-year-old is available for about 3.5 million pounds ($5.6 million), the newspaper said.
