McEntee to Retire as Head of Largest U.S. Public-Employee Union

Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Gerald McEntee, president of the 1.6 million-member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, will retire after leading the largest union of public employees for three decades, according to a state union leader.

McEntee, 76, is telling senior union officials he won’t seek re-election when his four-year term ends in 2012, according to David Warrick, the union’s leader in Indiana, who said he talked with McEntee this week.

AFSCME is the largest labor union for employees such as nurses, correction officers, child-care workers and trash haulers in state and local government. McEntee also heads the political committee of the AFL-CIO, the largest U.S. labor federation.
