Juncker Says Greek Referendum Is ‘Irritating Element’ in Debate

Luxembourg’s Jean-Claude Juncker, who leads the group of euro-area finance ministers, said a Greek proposal to hold a referendum on a second bailout package is an “irritating element” in Europe’s debate on how to solve the sovereign debt crisis.

News of the referendum “came as a surprise” to euro area leaders, who “perceived it as disloyal,” Juncker said on Luxembourg’s Radio 100.7 today. The moment for announcing a vote was “badly chosen” because it roiled markets, he said.
