Drug-Resistant Bacteria Claims Fourth S. African, Star Says

Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- A fourth person died from a drug-resistant bacteria, the Johannesburg-based Star reported, citing Marietjie Shelly, a spokeswoman for Life Healthcare Group Holdings Ltd.’s Glynnwood hospital.

Ten people were treated at the hospital in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, following the outbreak several weeks ago, four of whom have been discharged, the Star said. There have been no new cases and two people are being kept under close supervision in an isolation ward, the newspaper said.

An isolated case of the superbug, known as New Delhi Metallo-Beta-Lactamose, or NDM-1, was confirmed at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in September, it said.
