Berlusconi Calls Meeting Tonight With Italian Ministers

Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi called ministers to a meeting in Rome this evening to discuss plans to adopt austerity measures as quickly as possible, the government said in an e-mailed statement.

Berlusconi will meet with ministers dealing with the economy and with the foreign minister, according to the statement.

The Italian prime minister also spoke to German Chancellor Angela Merkel by phone to discuss the situation in the euro area following Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou’s decision to call a referendum on the Greek bailout plan, the statement said. Berlusconi emphasized Italy’s desire to implement austerity measures rapidly, it said.
