NCAA Implements Minimum Academic Standards for Postseason Play

The National Collegiate Athletic Association will implement academic standards for postseason play over the next four years, the college sports governing body said on a conference call.

The standards would start at a 900 Academic Progress Rate and rise to 930 -- equivalent to a 50 percent graduation rate -- at the end of the phase-in period.

Seven basketball teams would have been held out of the 68-team NCAA tournament last season and eight would have been kept out of the 35 bowl games, NCAA President Mark Emmert said on a conference call discussing the NCAA Division I Board of Directors vote.

The University of Connecticut, which won the NCAA basketball tournament last season with an APR of 893, would not have been allowed to compete in the event if these rules were in place, Emmert said earlier this week.
