U.K. Pub Beer Sales Decline 4.3% in Third Quarter, BBPA Says

Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. pub beer sales fell 4.3 percent in the third quarter from the same period a year earlier, the British Beer & Pub Association said today.

Including supermarkets and off-licenses, beer sales rose 1.6 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, the BBPA said in an e-mailed statement.

British pubs sales are being hit by cheaper alcohol at retailers and a weaker economy that has led to rising unemployment and reduced consumer demand.

There is no case for further tax increases, said Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the BBPA in the statement.

“We’ve seen beer tax rise by 35 percent since March 2008,” Simmonds said. “Given the right tax and regulatory environment we can grow the sector. We certainly don’t need the further beer tax rises the government is planning.”
