Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Pinch-hitter Allen Craig’s run-scoring single broke a sixth-inning tie and led the host St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win against the Texas Rangers in the opening game of the World Series.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is set for tomorrow night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Lance Berkman opened the scoring with a two-run single in the fourth inning for the Cardinals. Mike Napoli tied the game in the fifth with a two-run homer.

St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter got the win, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, and five Cardinals relievers combined for three scoreless innings. C.J. Wilson, the first of four Texas pitchers, took the loss.
