Portugal’s Ruling Social Democrats Lead in Poll, Noticias Says

Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) -- The ruling Social Democratic Party of Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho led the opposition Socialist Party by 10 percentage points in a survey of voters’ intentions for parliamentary elections, Diario de Noticias reported.

The survey indicated 43 percent backing from voters for the Social Democrats, who won 39 percent of the vote in June 5 elections, the Portuguese newspaper said. The survey indicated 33 percent support for the Socialists, who got 28 percent of the vote in the elections, Noticias said.

The survey also indicated 6 percent support for the conservative People’s Party, which is part of the ruling coalition and won 12 percent of the vote in the elections, according to Noticias.

The survey published today was carried out by the Catholic University on Sept. 10 and 11, and 1,457 valid responses were used, Noticias said. The margin of error is 2.6 percent, the newspaper said.
