Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Australia reduced Sri Lanka to 120-5 at the end of the third day of their opening cricket Test to close in on victory Test.
Mahela Jayawardene is 57 not out as Sri Lanka chases a victory total of 379. He teamed with Angelo Mathews, who scored 32, for a 53-run stand to end the day in Galle after Prasanna Jayawardene was dismissed by Ryan Harris without scoring.
Harris took 3-24, while Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson claimed one wicket each.
Michael Clarke scored 60 as Australia was bowled out for 210 in their second innings. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 105 in its first innings in reply to the visitors’ 273.
Fifth-ranked Australia would move above Sri Lanka into fourth in the International Cricket Council’s Test Championship standings by winning the best-of-three contest. It’s Australia’s first elite Test since January and Clarke’s first Test as captain since replacing Ponting.
