Costa Wins Tour de France 8th Stage; Hushovd Keeps Overall Lead

Alberto Rui Costa of Portugal won the eighth stage of cycling’s Tour de France as Norway’s Thor Hushovd maintained the race-leading yellow jersey.

Team Movistar’s Costa finished the 189-kilometer (117-mile) first mountain stage from Aigurande to Super-Besse in 4 hours, 36 minutes and 46 seconds, 12 seconds ahead of Belgian Philippe Gilbert of Team Omega Pharma.

Garmin-Cervelo’s Hushovd finished in the pack 15 seconds behind Costa to keep his one-second lead over Australian Cadel Evans of BMC Racing. Defending champion Alberto Contador of Spain also finished in the peleton and sits 20th, 1 minute, 42 seconds behind Hushovd.

Tomorrow’s ninth stage is a 208-kilometer ride from Issoire to Saint-Flour.
