May 28 (Bloomberg) -- The University of Virginia defeated the University of Denver 14-8 in the first semifinal of the college men’s lacrosse tournament.
Virginia will play the University of Maryland or Duke University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association final May 30 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Maryland and Duke play later today.
Virginia, which had led 9-2 at halftime, got three goals apiece from Steele Stanwick, Chris Bocklet and Mark Cockerton. Goalie Adam Ghitelman had 10 saves for the Cavaliers.
Jeremy Noble led the scoring for the Pioneers with three goals, while Jamie Faus recorded eight saves.
Both schools defeated higher-seeded teams to advance to the semifinals. Virginia beat No. 2 Cornell 13-9 and Denver defeated No. 3 Johns Hopkins 14-9 in quarterfinal games in Hempstead, New York.
