Saracens Beat Leicester 22-18 for First Premiership Rugby Title

May 28 (Bloomberg) -- Saracens held on beat two-time defending champion Leicester Tigers 22-18 to capture their first English Premiership rugby championship.

Saracens’ James Short scored the only try of the game at Twickenham Stadium in London as Saracens avenged a 33-27 loss in last year’s title game. Owen Farrell kicked 18 points, with five penalties and a conversion.

Toby Flood booted six penalties for Leicester, which was playing in its seventh straight final. The Tigers have won a record seven Premiership championships and nine English titles overall.

Leicester pushed for a winning try down the stretch, going through 31 phases of play with the clock alread stopped. Saracens continually held on after the Tigers were awarded a penalty and the game ended moments later when Leicester was penalized.
