Mavericks, Hawks, Heat, Bulls Win in Round 1 of NBA Playoffs

April 17 (Bloomberg) -- The Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks, Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls won the opening games in their National Basketball Association playoff series.

The New York Knicks travel to Boston today to meet the Celtics in the first game of their best-of-seven series. The Memphis Grizzlies are at the San Antonio Spurs, the New Orleans Hornets travel to Los Angeles to play the Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder host the Denver Nuggets.

At American Airlines Center in Dallas, the Mavericks, led by Dirk Nowitzki’s 28 points and 10 rebounds, defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 89-81 to take a one-game advantage in the Western Conference series. Jason Kidd added 24 points.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points for the Trail Blazers, who meet the Mavericks in Dallas on April 19 for Game 2.

At Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, the Hawks beat the Orlando Magic 103-93. Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 25 points followed by Jamal Crawford with 23 points.

Dwight Howard scored 46 points and Jameer Nelson added 27 points for the Magic, who host the Hawks April 19 in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference matchup.

In Miami, the Heat won their first game over the Philadelphia 76ers 97-89 at American Airlines Arena. Chris Bosh scored 25 points for the Heat, LeBron James had 21 points and Dwyane Wade had 17.

Thaddeus Young led the 76ers with 20 points and Jrue Holiday had 19. The teams meet again tomorrow for an Eastern Conference game in Miami.

At United Center in Chicago, the Bulls rallied to beat the Indiana Pacers 104-99 behind Derrick Rose’s 39 points. Luol Deng added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago.

Danny Granger scored 24 points for Indiana. Chicago hosts Game 2 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series tomorrow.
