Heyward hit a solo homer in the second inning at Nationals Park in Washington while Braves starting pitcher Derek Lowe and four relievers combined on a five-hit shutout.

There are six games scheduled today as the major league season begins on a Thursday for the first time in 35 years. The New York Yankees are hosting the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium in the first of three nationally televised games on Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN.
