Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Facebook Inc. hired Dentsu Inc., Japan’s largest advertising company, to be its sales and marketing representative in the nation as the world’s biggest social-networking site expands there.
Dentsu will provide consulting services for companies that want to use Facebook for advertising and marketing, the Japanese company said in a statement. Dentsu will have exclusive rights to sell space on Facebook’s premium ad service for one year, according to the statement.
Facebook, which is based in Palo Alto, California, and has more than 500 million users, is focusing on expansion in Japan and Russia, Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in July. The site has almost doubled its number of users in Japan to about 2.6 million in the past six months, according to market researcher Socialbakers.
Facebook opened an office in Japan in September.
A call to Kumiko Hidaka, a Facebook spokeswoman in California, was not answered Monday.
