Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Kim Clijsters moved to the brink of her second straight Grand Slam tennis title, defeating Vera Zvonareva to reach the women’s final of the Australian Open.
Clijsters, a 27-year-old Belgian who won the U.S. Open in September, will face China’s Li Na for the championship.
Clijsters’s 6-3, 6-3 victory today at Rod Laver Arena will move her past Zvonareva and into the No. 2 spot in the world rankings behind Caroline Wozniacki. Zvonareva was trying to reach her third straight Grand Slam final.
Li fought off a match point in the second set earlier today before beating Wozniacki 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and becoming the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final.
