Lanson Looked at Remy Cointreau Champagne Brands, Paillard Says

Lanson-BCC, the maker of Boizel and Lanson champagne, studied documents for potential buyers of Remy Cointreau SA’s Piper Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck brands, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bruno Paillard said.

Lanson is “in principle” open to an acquisition, Paillard said today in a telephone interview, though he wouldn’t say whether the Reims, France-based company will take part in the second round of bidding for the Remy brands.

“Our growth wouldn’t depend on buying Piper Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck,” Paillard said. “The group can make an acquisition, but it doesn’t need it.”

Remy Cointreau, the maker of Remy Martin cognac, said in November that it planned to sell its champagne unit. Potential buyers include LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, which made an offer of 300 million euros ($410 million) in the first round of bidding, as well as Lanson and smaller cooperatives like Nicolas Feuillate and Alliance-Champagne, La Tribune said today.

Lanson-BCC fell 1.37 euros, or 2.4 percent, to 55.10 euros as of the 5:30 p.m. close of trading in Paris.
