Davis Love III Named U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, Succeeding Pavin

Davis Love III was named today as captain of the 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team by the PGA of America, succeeding Corey Pavin.

Love, 46, was an assistant to Pavin for the last edition of golf’s premier team event, which Europe won by one point at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales in October. He has played in the biennial contest six times, compiling a 9-12-5 record. His last appearance as a player was in 2004.

Love lobbied for the job soon after the 2010 matches ended. He was introduced as U.S. captain during a press conference at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, where the matches will be held on Sept. 28-30 next year.

The European squad will be led by Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal, 44, a two-time Masters Tournament winner who was appointed captain on Jan. 18, succeeding Colin Montgomerie.
