Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Aston Villa signed Sunderland striker Darren Bent to a 4 1/2-year contract as the English Premier League soccer club tries to avoid relegation.
Villa, which is in 17th place in the 20-member league, didn’t give financial details, although the team called the 26-year-old player a “record signing” in a statement today on its website. The Independent reported today that the transfer fee is as much as 24 million pounds ($38 million).
Bent’s contract will last until June 2015. He’ll be available to play against Manchester City this weekend, the team said.
