Absa, Anglo, BHP, Lewis, Truworths: South African Equity Preview

The following stocks may rise or fall in South Africa. Symbols are in parentheses and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index rose 243.52, or 0.8 percent, to 32,559.72 at the 5 p.m. close in Johannesburg.

Absa Group Ltd. (ASA SJ): Consumer prices climbed an annual 3.6 percent in December, matching the previous month’s increase, according to the median estimate of 22 economists polled by Bloomberg. Statistics South Africa releases the data at 10 a.m. Shares in the country’s biggest retail lender jumped 1.4 percent to 140 rand.

BHP Billiton Plc (BIL SJ): Copper in London traded within 0.3 percent of a record as investors sought to hedge against a declining dollar and on speculation demand will outpace supply as the global economy extends a recovery. Zinc and lead gained. The world’s largest mining company, jumped 6 rand, or 2.2 percent, to 275 rand. Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ), the diversified mining company that makes up 10 percent of South Africa’s benchmark stock index advanced 1.3 percent, to 364.99 rand.

Lewis Group Ltd. (LEW SJ): Retail sales probably advanced 6.8 percent in November year-on-year compared with 6.1 percent in October, according to the median estimate of 15 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Statistics South Africa releases the data at 1 p.m. in Pretoria. Lewis Group shares retreated 2.1 percent to 76 rand. Truworths International Ltd. (TRU SJ), South Africa’s largest clothing retailer, slumped 3.6 percent, to 68 rand.

Poynting Antennas Ltd. (POY SJ): The telecommunications equipment manufacturer holds a shareholders’ meeting. The stock was unchanged at 11 cents.

Rockwell Diamonds Inc. (RDI SJ): The miner of gemstones, said revenue was $16.4 million, giving it an operating profit of $1.8 million in the third quarter ended Nov. 30, from an operating loss of $614, 000 in the second quarter. Rockwell was unchanged at 40 cents.

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) added 0.8 percent to $26.4155. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) gained 1 percent to $45.10. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) rose 1.1 percent to $80.06. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) lost advanced 2.3 percent to $4.81. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) increased 1.3 percent to $16.89. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) gained 2.9 percent to $11.43. Impala Platinum Holdings (IMPUY US) added 0.8 percent to $34.10. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) dropped 0.8 percent to $5.11. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) declined 0.3 percent $51.77.
