Justine Henin Overcomes Challenge From Mirza at Australian Open

Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin defeated Sania Mirza in three sets on the opening day of the Australian Open.

Henin, a former top-ranked player from Belgium, beat Mirza of India, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Henin, the second favorite to win the year’s first Grand Slam tournament after fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters, was playing her first official match since sustaining an elbow injury at Wimbledon.

Henin, ranked 13th in the world, was the champion in Australia in 2004 and a runner-up to Serena Williams last year. Mirza, a former top 30 player, has dropped to No. 145 on the WTA Tour after struggling with injuries.
