Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who won the Lombardi Award this season as the nation’s top college lineman, declared he is skipping his senior season to enter the National Football League draft.
Fairley’s announcement today at Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama, comes less than 24 hours after his Tigers teammate, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton, also said he will leave school early and enter the NFL draft.
Fairley had 24 tackles for a loss this season, including a single-season school record 11.5 sacks. He had 60 total tackles while leading the defense as Auburn went undefeated and won the national championship.
“I was thinking, ‘What more could I accomplish my senior year?’” Fairley said in a speech at his alma mater.
