Anglo American, Standard Bank: South African Stocks Preview

Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall in South Africa. Symbols are in parentheses and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index rose to the highest level since May 2008, adding 321.79, or 1 percent, to 32,483.94 at the 5 p.m. close in Johannesburg.

Alert Steel Holdings Ltd. (AET SJ): The seller of steel, building and hardware materials holds a shareholders’ meeting. The stock was unchanged at 16 cents.

Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ): Anglo American Plc, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc., Xstrata Plc and Antofagasta Plc accepted a new optional royalty system in Chile, the world’s top copper-producing nation, Mining Minister Laurence Golborne said. Anglo American’s shares rose 9.99 rand, or 2.9 percent, to 359.49 rand.

Business Connexion Group Ltd. (BCX SJ): The information and communications-technology company holds an annual shareholders’ meeting. Business Connexion fell 9 cents, or 1.3 percent, to 6.65 rand.

Datatec Ltd. (DTC SJ): The networking technology and computer-services company releases its interim management statement for the quarter through December. The stock lost 2 cents, or less than 0.1 percent, to 33.48 rand.

Standard Bank Group Ltd. (SBK SJ): Africa’s largest lender holds a press conference on the end of its securities joint venture with Credit Suisse Group AG. Standard Bank rose 43 cents, or 0.4 percent, to 108.43 rand.

Village Main Reef Gold Mining Co. (VIL SJ): The mining-investment company said it plans to sell 10 million shares to institutional investors and use part of the money to fund a planned expansion of Consolidated Murchison Mine (Pty) Ltd. The shares were unchanged at 2.30 rand.

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) gained 4.1 percent to $26.60. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) advanced 0.8 percent to $45.56. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) increased 2.4 percent to $80.23. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) dropped 1 percent to $4.87. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) fell 0.1 percent to $17.27. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) gained 1 percent to $11.51. Impala Platinum Holdings (IMPUY US) rose 1.3 percent to $34.60. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) dropped 0.4 percent to $5.04. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) rose 2.8 percent to $51.51.
