West Ham May Give Allardyce Six-Month Trial, Sun Says: Roundup

Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers, with clickable links to the Web.

Allardyce Trial

West Ham is ready to give Sam Allardyce a six-month contract as coach, the Sun reported.

The team’s board has lost faith in current manager Avram Grant and first-choice replacement Martin O’Neill is reluctant to take over, the Sun said.

Grant has a “20 percent chance” of keeping his job, the Sun quoted a club insider as saying.

Campbell Return?

Sol Campbell could return to Arsenal for a third stint, according to the Daily Express.

Campbell, 36, is unhappy on the sidelines at Newcastle and could sign a short-term contract with the Gunners, who need defensive cover, the Express said.

Gunners Targets

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger will turn to Bolton’s Gary Cahill or Werder Bremen’s Per Mertesacker to reinforce his depleted defense, the Daily Mirror said.

Wenger has lost Sebastien Squillaci to a hamstring injury, while Thomas Vermaelen hasn’t played since August because of an Achilles tendon problem, the Mirror added.

Bentley to Blues

Birmingham is set to sign Tottenham winger David Bentley on loan and Rangers striker Kenny Miller on a permanent deal, the Daily Mirror reported.

Blues coach Alex McLeish also wants to sign Robbie Keane from Spurs and is considering hiring Boca Juniors forward Pablo Mouche on loan, according to the Mirror.
