U.S. Nuclear Energy Output Falls as NextEra Shuts Florida Plant

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. nuclear output fell as NextEra Energy Inc. shut the St. Lucie 2 reactor in Florida, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported.

Production from U.S. plants dropped by 564 megawatts from yesterday to 97,192 megawatts, or 96 percent of capacity, according to the report today from the NRC and data compiled by Bloomberg. Four of 104 power reactors were offline.

NextEra shut its 839-megawatt Saint Lucie 2 reactor in Florida, according to the commission’s daily reactor status report. The unit operated at 68 percent of capacity yesterday.

The Saint Lucie 2 reactor is located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Fort Pierce. St. Lucie 1, another reactor at the site, is operating at full capacity, according to the commission.
