Capitals Weather Rain to Beat Penguins 3-1 in Winter Classic

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Eric Fehr scored two goals as the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 during a rainy outdoor Winter Classic.

The National Hockey League had moved the fourth annual game from an afternoon start when weather forecasters predicted a clear night at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

After a scoreless first period, Evgeni Malkin put the Penguins ahead 1-0 at 2:13 of the second period. Mike Knuble scored on a power play almost five minutes later for the Capitals before Fehr scored with 15 seconds left in the period.

Fehr sealed the victory at 11:59 of the final period. Goalie Semyon Varlamov had 32 saves for the Capitals (23-12-5).

Marc-Andre Fleury saved 29 shots for the Penguins, who (25-12-3) have the best record in the Eastern Conference.
