Portuguese President Cavaco Silva Widens Lead in Poll, SIC Says

Dec. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva led Manuel Alegre and other candidates by a wider margin in a survey of voters’ intentions for presidential elections, television station SIC reported on its website.

The survey indicated 60 percent backing from voters for Cavaco Silva, 3 percentage points more than in November, SIC said. The survey indicated 30 percent support for Alegre, 2 percentage points lower than in the previous poll, according to SIC. Based on these figures, Cavaco Silva would be re-elected in the first round of an election, SIC said.

Alegre is backed by the Socialist party of Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates. Cavaco Silva is backed by the Social Democrats, the biggest opposition party in parliament. Portugal will hold a presidential election on Jan. 23.

The survey published today by SIC was carried out by Eurosondagem SA from Dec. 15 to 20, and 2,052 valid interviews were used, SIC said. The margin of error is 2.16 percent.
