U.S. nuclear output was little changed as NextEra Energy Inc. started its Turkey Point 4 reactor in Florida and Southern Co. shut its Hatch 1 unit in Georgia, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported.
Production from U.S. plants fell by 189 megawatts from yesterday to 96,515 megawatts, or 95 percent of capacity, according to the report today from the NRC and data compiled by Bloomberg. Four of 104 power reactors were offline.
NextEra switched on its 693-megawatt Turkey Point 4 unit after repairing a condenser tube leak that required a shutdown on Dec. 10. The reactor is operating at 1 percent of capacity.
Another 693-megawatt reactor at the site, Turkey Point 3, is operating at full power. The plant is located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Miami.
Southern Co. shut its 876-megawatt Hatch 1 reactor to repair a feedwater pump, Alyson Fuqua, a spokeswoman at the plant, said by e-mail yesterday.
The fault was found on Dec. 10 and repairs were delayed so the reactor could supply power to the electricity grid during a cold snap, Fuqua said.
“The unit will be offline to perform the repairs for a short time and then is scheduled to return to full power,” she said. She declined to elaborate on the schedule.
Another unit at the site, the 883-megawatt Hatch 2, is operating at full power. The plant is located 74 miles west of Savannah, Georgia.
Exelon Corp. boosted its 619-megawatt Oyster Creek reactor in New Jersey to 65 percent of capacity from 25 percent yesterday after crews replaced a faulty transformer that was installed last month.
“All the work is done, and the reactor is ramping to full power today,” David Benson, a company spokesman, said in an e-mailed response to questions.
The plant had operated at reduced power since Dec. 12. It is 33 miles north of Atlantic City.
Energy Northwest slowed its 1,190-megawatt Columbia reactor in Washington to 65 percent of capacity from full power yesterday to repair leaking steam relief valves, Victor Dricks, an NRC spokesman, said in an e-mail. The plant is located 55 miles northwest of Walla Walla.
Exelon returned its 867-megawatt Dresden 3 reactor in Illinois to full power yesterday after reducing it to 85 percent of capacity for maintenance, Krista Lopykinski, a plant spokeswoman, said yesterday by telephone.
“Dresden 3 conducted a fuel rod pattern adjustment,” Lopykinski said. The modifications are done periodically to increase reactor efficiency.
The 867-megawatt Unit 2 is also operating at 100 percent of capacity. The plant is 48 miles southwest of Chicago, where Exelon is based.
