S. Africa Probes Claims of Overfishing Lobsters, Cape Times Says

South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will investigate claims that firms given lobster quotas are hauling out more than five times the amount they were allocated, the Cape Times reported today.

The Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association estimates that quota holders have removed about 278 metric tons of lobster off the western coast, compared with their seasonal quota of 53 tons, the newspaper said.

Overfishing poses a threat to the already depleted stocks of the West Coast Rock Lobster, the group said, according to the Cape Times.
