U.K. Protesters Invade Shops Owned by Philip Green, Times Says

The biggest branch of Topshop, a U.K. clothing retail chain owned by Philip Green’s Arcadia Group Plc, was forced to close for three hours on Dec. 4 when hundreds of people protesting against tax avoidance invaded the store, the London-based Times reported.

The demonstrators were from a group called U.K. Uncut, which says tax that’s avoided would enable the government to make smaller spending cuts; they were ejected from the Oxford Street, London, store by guards and 30 police officers, the newspaper said.

Another 22 sit-ins and protests were held elsewhere, the Times said.

The nominal owner of Arcadia is Green’s wife, who lives in Monaco, a tax haven; Green was recently appointed by the government to advise on how to raise efficiency in the Civil Service, the newspaper said.
