Indian Pulses Production May Surge to Record 16.5 Million Tons

India may harvest 16.5 million tons of pulses this year, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said at a conference in New Delhi today.

Though India imported a large quantity of pulses, the higher production will help the country become self-sufficient in pulses output, Pawar said. The minister said the increase was part of the Accelerated Pulses Production Program.

The minister said that although India typically produced about 15 million tons of pulses annually, the country still needed to import about 2 to 3 million tons to meet demand.
