Motiva Has Equipment Failure, Flares at Refinery in Louisiana

Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Motiva Enterprises LLC said it had an equipment failure that resulted in the release of an unspecified amount of nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide at its Norco, Louisiana, refinery, according to a report to the National Response Center.

The incident happened at 8:40 a.m. local time yesterday, according to the report.

“A flare due to both sulfur plants tripping” led to the release of the gases. The units were being restarted, according to the report.

Motiva is a refining and marketing joint venture of Saudi Refining Inc., a unit of Saudi Arabian Oil Co., and Shell Oil Co., a unit of Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

U.S. refineries must notify the center if they release hazardous substances in excess of reportable quantities, according to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund.

The refinery, one of two that Motiva operates in southern Louisiana, has a capacity of 250,000 barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
