Ohio Republican Rob Portman Defeats Fisher for U.S. Senate Seat

Former U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman, a Republican, beat Democrat Lee Fisher in Ohio’s Senate race, the Associated Press projected.

Portman, 54, won even as Democrats sought to tie his candidacy to Wall Street and to his work in the administration of former President George W. Bush. Portman was Bush’s budget chief after holding the trade position.

He focused his campaign on job creation, depriving Fisher -- who as lieutenant governor oversees Ohio’s economic development -- of ownership of the issue voters say they care about the most. Portman also had a campaign cash advantage of almost $10 million.

Portman will replace retiring Republican Senator George Voinovich.
