Nov. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic Governor Joe Manchin defeated Republican businessman John Raese to win an open Senate seat in West Virginia, keeping a post held by a Democrat for a half-century, MSNBC and Fox News project.

Manchin, 63, will fill the seat held by Robert Byrd, a Democrat who died in June at age 92. Carte Goodwin, appointed by Manchin to temporarily fill the position, didn’t run. No Republican has represented West Virginia in the U.S. Senate since the 1950s.
