Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- OAO Rostelecom, Russia’s dominant long-distance phone company, may take part in an auction to buy Ukrainian state-owned telephone company VAT Ukrtelecom, according to a spokesman at Rostelecom.
Rostelecom will “study carefully the terms of the sale of Ukrtelecom proposed by the government of Ukraine,” said Oleg Rumyantsev in answer to e-mailed questions from Bloomberg News.
Ukraine’s State Property Fund has yet to set a date for the auction. Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said yesterday the government aims to sell the company by the year-end.
Billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man, is also interested in acquiring Ukrtelecom, Delo newspaper reported today, without saying where it got the information.
