Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- OAO AvtoVAZ, Russia’s largest automaker, started production of a new hatchback after Prime Minister Vladimir Putin showcased the model on a 2,000 kilometer journey through the country’s Far East region last month.
“We weren’t planning to start production of the Lada Kalina Sport this year, but the demand is so high that we’ll make at least 500 of the cars this year,” said Igor Burenkov, a spokesman for AvtoVAZ.
All of the automobiles will be canary yellow, the same color as the model that Putin drove, Buryenkov said by phone from Togliatti, the Volga River city where AvtoVAZ is based. The car will retail for about 375,000 rubles ($12,200).
