Standard Bank, Investec, Metmar: South African Equities Preview

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall in South Africa. Symbols are in parentheses and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index closed 0.11 point lower at 28,502.08 at the close in Johannesburg.

Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ): Copper fell for a second day, losing as much as 0.3 percent to $7,596 a metric ton on the London Metal Exchange. Anglo, the diversified mining company that makes up almost 10 percent of South Africa’s benchmark stock index, rose 99 cents, or 0.4 percent, to 283.99 rand. Shares in larger rival BHP Billiton Plc (BIL SJ), which accounts for more than 12 percent of the index, dropped 28 cents, or 0.1 percent, to 218 rand.

Investec Plc (INP SJ): The private bank and wealth manager is scheduled to give an update on business. Its stock rose 48 cents, or 0.9 percent, to 56.30 rand.

Metmar Ltd. (MML SJ): A Kalahari Resources (Pty) Ltd. boardroom dispute is to be heard by a Johannesburg High Court. Metmar has an 11.7 percent stake in the closely held company partnering with ArcelorMittal to develop a $1.5 billion manganese project in South Africa. The shares rose 4 cents, or 1.1 percent, to 3.55 rand.

Sasol Ltd. (SOL SJ): Oil fell for a third day, losing as much as 1 percent to $75.24 a barrel in electronic trading in New York. Stock of Sasol, the world’s biggest maker of motor fuel from coal, fell 4.85 rand, or 1.6 percent, to 298.65 rand.

Spur Corp. (SUR SJ): The fast-food restaurant operator is scheduled to releases annual results. Spur was unchanged at 13.30 rand.

Standard Bank Group Ltd. (SBK SJ): The bank and Credit Suisse Group AG agreed to end a joint-venture South African stock-brokerage. Shares rose 2.31 rand, or 2.2 percent, to 106.31 rand.

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUKY US) added 0.2 percent to $19.97. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) slid 4.8 percent to $44.50. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) rose 0.3 percent to $61.56. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) climbed 1.4 percent to $4.96. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) slipped 0.2 percent to $15.29. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) rose 1 percent to $11.55. Impala Platinum Holdings Co. (IMPUY US) declined 1.9 percent to $25.35. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) climbed 0.4 percent to $5.05. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) fell 1.1 percent to $42. Telkom South Africa Ltd. (TLKGY US) advanced 0.9 percent to $19.12.
