BYU to Leave Mountain West, Become Independent in Football

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Brigham Young University is pulling out of the Mountain West Conference.

BYU said in a news release that its football team will become an independent starting in 2011. The Provo, Utah, school’s other athletic programs, including men’s basketball, are joining the West Coast Conference.

BYU’s football team went 11-2 and finished second behind Texas Christian University in the Mountain West last season. The Cougars open their 2010 schedule on Sept. 4 at home against the University of Washington.

The University of Notre Dame is among college football’s independents, or schools without a conference affiliation.
