Chelsea Revives Neymar Interest, Telegraph Says: Soccer Roundup

The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers, with clickable links to the Web.

Neymar Transfer Twist

Premier League champion Chelsea is considering reviving its interest in Neymar less than a week after the teenage striker signed a five-year contract with Brazilian club Santos, the Telegraph reported.

Chelsea, which last week had a 23 million-pound ($35.8 million) bid rejected by Santos, has been given encouragement that a deal for the 18-year-old could still be done before the transfer window closes Aug. 31, the newspaper added.

Mascherano to Milan?

Inter Milan made a 20 million-pound bid for Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, the Sun reported, citing Inter Sporting Director Marco Branca.

Barcelona has also tabled an offer of 12 million pounds for the Argentina captain, which is 8 million pounds short of Liverpool’s valuation, the Sun said.

Mascherano was left out of the team beaten 3-0 at Manchester City three days ago and didn’t travel to Turkey for today’s Europa League game against Trabzonspor.

Scholes Vow Required

England coach Fabio Capello wants Paul Scholes to declare publicly that he’s available if he’s to play in next month’s Euro 2012 qualifying matches, the Independent reported.

The 35-year-old Manchester United midfielder regrets turning down the chance to return for this year’s World Cup, the paper said. Scholes quit the national team six years ago.

N’Zogbia Rejection

Wigan rejected Birmingham City’s improved bid of about 9 million pounds for Charles N’Zogbia, the Guardian reported.

Sunderland is also interested in signing the 24-year-old, who has been a target of Birmingham manager Alex McLeish since the end of last season, the paper added.

Nigerian Nears Hammers

Inter Milan striker Victor Obinna is set to join West Ham after the clubs reached an agreement for the transfer of the 23-year-old Nigerian, the Independent said. Obinna, who has scored 11 goals in 34 games for his country, had a medical yesterday, the paper reported.
