Michelle Obama, Laura Bush to Join in Sept. 11 Memorial Service

First lady Michelle Obama and former first lady Laura Bush will appear together on Sept. 11 at a memorial service for the victims who died when one of the four hijacked airliners crashed in a Pennsylvania farm field.

The event is being held in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at the future location of a national memorial for Flight 93.

The two will honor the 40 passengers and crew who were killed there on Sept. 11, according to Katie McCormick-Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for the first lady, and David Sherzer, a spokesman for former President George W. Bush.

The first phase of the memorial’s construction will be completed next year in time for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, according to the National Park Service. The memorial will include 40 large wind chimes, a “Field of Honor,” and 40 groves of red and sugar maple trees.

The passengers aboard Flight 93 are credited with overpowering the hijackers, causing the plane to crash and thwarting an attack on Washington, D.C.

Two other hijacked commercial jets crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and another crashed into the Pentagon in an attack orchestrated by al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Almost 3,000 people died.
