Aug. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Martin Kaymer won a playoff at the PGA Championship for his first victory at one of golf’s four major tournaments.

The 25-year-old German beat Bubba Watson over three extra holes after they finished regulation play at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, in a tie for the lead at 11-under par.

“In the playoff it was strange, I was really calm and confident,” Kaymer said at the presentation ceremony.

Kaymer, who began the day four shots behind 54-hole leader Nick Watney, is the second German to win a major golf title after Bernhard Langer, who was the Masters Tournament champion in 1985 and 1993.

Dustin Johnson missed out on the playoff after being penalized two shots for grounding his club in a bunker on the 18th hole of regulation play.

Johnson’s score fell to 9-under par after the sanction.
