Obama Talks With Afghan President Karzai, White House Says

Aug. 13 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai today during an hour-long video teleconference, discussing the need to “work together to keep the pressure on the Taliban and to build Afghan capacity,” according to a White House statement.

Karl Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, and General David Petraeus, who leads U.S. forces there, participated in the discussion from Kabul, the White House said.

The leaders discussed parliamentary elections, along with “anti-corruption efforts, civilian casualties, and regional relations,” the statement said. “President Obama reaffirmed that the United States is committed to partnering with the Afghan people to ensure that Afghanistan is a stable, secure, and prosperous country.”
