Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers, with clickable links to the Web.
Aston Villa may take Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia as part of a three-way swap that would bring Fulham goalie Mark Schwarzer to the Gunners, the Daily Mirror said.
Fulham would get Villa’s Brad Friedel, who wants to leave the club, which is without a manager since Martin O’Neill quit this week, the newspaper said.
Fight for 14-Year-Old
Chelsea will sign 14-year-old Burkina Faso prospect Bertrand Traore, seeing off a challenge from Manchester United, the Sun said.
The midfielder was a standout during the Under-17 World Cup last year, the newspaper said.
Roque for Fulham
New Fulham manager Mark Hughes wants Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz to join his club, the Mail said.
Hughes brought Santa Cruz to Blackburn Rovers from Bayern Munich, and later recruited him for City. The Paraguay national team member is concerned he might not make City’s 25-player squad, the newspaper said.
Aston Villa may give acting coach Kevin MacDonald a longer spell in charge as the club tries to find a replacement for O’Neill, the Guardian said.
MacDonald, who was the reserve manager, may stay in place for several weeks or longer, the newspaper said. American owner Randy Lerner flew to Birmingham this week to discuss replacements, the Guardian said.
20 Million-Pound Cole
West Ham will sell striker Carlton Cole if Liverpool offers 20 million pounds ($31.2 million), the Sun said.
The London club turned down a 12 million-pound bid from Stoke and is demanding more from Liverpool because there’s little time to find a replacement with the season starting this weekend, the newspaper said.
