Blackburn Goalkeeper Robinson Quits England Team After Call-Up

Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson said he’s quitting international soccer after yesterday being named in Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Hungary this week.

The 30-year-old, who made the last of his 41 England appearances in 2007 against Russia, said he wants to concentrate on his club career if he isn’t going to be first choice for his country.

“Only now have I been able to make this decision as previously I haven’t been in contention for selection,” the British Broadcasting Corp. cited Robinson as saying. “I don’t see myself as a number three or four keeper and find that role very frustrating.”

The Football Association confirmed Robinson’s decision on its website, adding there are no plans to call up a replacement for the exhibition game against Hungary at Wembley Stadium on Aug. 11.

Manchester City’s Joe Hart and Ben Foster of Birmingham remain in the squad, although there are no places for David James or Rob Green, who both played at the World Cup.

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs were among outfield players included for a first time. Fulham striker Bobby Zamora was also selected in the squad for England’s only warmup before the start of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship next month.

Capello selected only 10 players from the World Cup squad that lost in the round of 16 to Germany.
