Former General Motors President F. James McDonald Dies at 87

F. James McDonald, who served as president and chief operating officer of General Motors Corp. in the 1980s, died yesterday. He was 87.

The cause of death wasn’t available, Tom Wilkinson, a spokesman for the company, now known as General Motors Co., said in an interview.

A former general manager of the Pontiac and Chevrolet brands, McDonald served as president and operating chief of the automaker from Feb.1, 1981 to Aug. 31, 1987. He was a graduate of the General Motors Institute, the precursor of Kettering University, in Flint, Michigan.

McDonald was born on Aug. 3, 1922, in Saginaw, Michigan. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty; daughter Marybeth Cunningham; sons John and Tim; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, according to a statement from GM.
