Lekota Reinstated as S. African COPE Leader, Business Day Says

A South African High Court yesterday reinstated Mosiuoa Lekota as president of the opposition Congress of the People party, Business Day reported, citing the judgment.

South Gauteng High Court Judge Rami Mathopo said the vote of no confidence in Lekota, his removal and the appointment of Mbhazima Shilowa as his replacement was illegal, the Johannesburg-based newspaper said.

COPE was formed two years ago by dissidents from South Africa’s ruling African National Congress and won 7.42 percent of the vote in 2009’s general elections, making it the third-largest political party in the country.
