Hall of Fame UCLA Coach John Wooden in Hospital for Dehydration

Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is “resting comfortably” at a Los Angeles hospital after being admitted two days ago due to dehydration, the school said.

Wooden, 99, spent a “peaceful night,” a day after being admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, school spokesman Marc Dellins said in an e-mailed news release, adding that no other information regarding Wooden’s condition will be released.

He is gravely ill, the Los Angeles Times said last night, while Los Angeles television station KCAL reported that he hadn’t eaten for the past few days.

Wooden coached UCLA to 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association championships from 1964-1975, winning seven straight. During that span, the Bruins won a record 88 consecutive games overall and 38 straight in the NCAA tournament.

He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961 after becoming a three-time All-American as a player at Purdue. When enshrined as a coach in 1973, he became the first person honored as both a player and a coach.
