Yankees Beat Mets 2-1 on Kevin Russo’s First Major League RBIs

May 22 (Bloomberg) -- Kevin Russo drove in the first runs of his Major League Baseball career to give the New York Yankees a 2-1 win over the crosstown rival New York Mets.

Russo doubled against Elmer Dessens to score Nick Swisher and Francisco Cervelli in the seventh inning for the Yankees (26-16) in the first of a three-game series at Citi Field. Last night’s win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Yankees.

First baseman Ike Davis doubled in the bottom of the ninth to score Jason Bay for the Mets (20-23), who lost for the eighth time in the last 10 games.

Yankee righthander Javier Vazquez (3-4) got the win, allowing one hit in six scoreless innings before being forced to leave the game when he injured his right index finger while attempting a sacrifice bunt in the top of the seventh. Mariano Rivera got his eighth save, allowing two hits and one run in the final inning.

Dessens (0-1) was the loser. He followed Hisanori Takahashi, the Mets’ starting pitcher, who made his first career major league start and matched Vazquez by throwing six shutout innings.
